UPDATE: 81-Year-Old Man Dies in Mt. Sinai Crash

Suffolk police still investigating the three-car accident.

UPDATE, 10:45 p.m. – An 81-year-old man died and an 86-year-old man is in critical condition Monday night after a three-car accident at approximately 2:35 p.m. on North Ocean Avenue at Canal Road in Mt. Sinai.

Suffolk police said Bennie Demaro, 86, was heading north on North Ocean Avenue and tried to make a left turn onto Canal Road when his vehicle was hit by a pickup truck traveling south. Demaro's car then struck a third car.

Demaro is listed in critical condition at Stony Brook University Hospital. His passenger, Salvatore Anselmo, 81, of Coram, was transported to John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the pickup truck was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue; the driver of the third vehicle and her 16-year-old son were not injured.

Suffolk police impounded the vehicles and said the investigation is continuing.

AMAZING, AN AUTO ACCIDENT, ONE MAN HAS DIED AND ANOTHER IN CRITICAL CONDITION AND SOMEONE HAS CHOSEN THIS FORUM TO CRITICIZE THE POLICE FOR NOT PATROLING AND PREVENTING THE ACCIDENT, HOW PREPOSTEROUS. NOT ONLY DO YOUR COMMENTS SOUND VINDICTIVE, BUT ALSO SHOWS A LACK OF COMMON SENSE. I'D LIKE TO GET BACK ON TOPIC AND PASS ON MY CONDOLENCES TO THE ANSELMO FAMILY AND HOPE THAT B. DEMARO CAN MAKE A FULL RECOVERY.
