Police Lock Down Port Jeff High School After Driver Flees Car Stop

Police say suspect is still at large after running away from cops.

Thursday night's Scraggy Olympics at was locked down for an hour while cops searched for a driver who fled across school grounds after he was pulled over, according to Superintendent Ken Bossert and Suffolk Police.

Police say that a Suffolk County COPE officer stopped a 2006 Infiniti G35 at Main Street and Barnum Avenue around 6 p.m. near Port Jefferson High School when the driver jumped out of his car and ran away, crossing over the school's tennis courts.

Inside the school building, parents, students and teachers were getting ready for the annual Scraggy Olympics, a popular school competition that pits teachers against parents in a variety of fun events.

Superintendent Bossert said that the police notified school officials of the pursuit and gave them a description of the suspect just in case he tried to take shelter inside the school.

Police described the man as a black male, 6 feet, 2 inches tall and approximately 250 pounds. His identity was not known.

"We put the school on lock down, secured the entrances and exits and secured the gymnasium," Bossert said by phone on Friday morning. "One hour later they said that we could remove the lock down."

Police said that they searched the school grounds but as of Friday morning the man had not been found. The car was impounded.

Inside the school the event continued for the rest of the night without any other interruptions.

"It was a somewhat awkward beginning," said Bossert. "But we had lots of fun and lots of participation."
