Belle Terre and Port Jefferson Village Merger?

Port Jefferson officials are considering it, according the Port Times Record. What do you think?

As village officials grappled with coming to terms on a budget for next year that illustrated a "severe" revenue problem, according to the village treasurer, moving forward the village is exploring the thought of merging with a contiguous village – Belle Terre.

According to the Port Times Record, Mayor Margot Garant said she's hoping to approach Belle Terre about a merger, as a central government would be able share existing services and consolidate some overlapping ones.

For example, minutes from Belle Terre's March meeting show that, "The Village is working to include in next year’s budget the purchase of equipment and hiring of a grounds person to take care of tree debris and repair signs" – something the village's highway department may be able handle if the two villages merge.

"You get good economies of scale with highway, code," Trustee Lee Rosner said.
