Deadline Nears for Village LIPA Tax Settlement Agreement

LIPA's offer deadline is Oct. 20.

The Oct. 20 deadline for local municipalites to enter into an agreement on a LIPA tax assessment settlement is nearing.

In an interview with the Port Times Record, Port Jefferson Mayor Margot Garant said she does not anticipate a problem if the village were to pass the deadline without a binding agreement because LIPA knows "we're negotiating in good faith."

The Port Times Record reported that LIPA extended an offer in June to drop its challenges on the tax assessments on the Northport and Port Jefferson power plants, as well as two in Nassau County, if the local taxing authorities — Port Jefferson Village and the Town of Brookhaven, in the case of the Port Jefferson plant — were to reduce the assessments by two-thirds over the course of a 10-year period.
