Letter: Village Cancels Town Hall Meeting on Power Plant

Letter from Port Jefferson LIPA Task Force about postponing the Nov. 17 LIPA Town Hall meeting

The following is the village's official letter on the cancellation of Wednesday's Long Island Power Authority Task Force meeting on the future of the Port Jefferson power plant:

Dear Port Jefferson Residents,

The joint village/school district LIPA Task Force has decided to postpone the "town hall" meeting previously announced for this Wednesday (Nov. 17) until after the New Year. We do not take the decision to postpone lightly as we know many in the community are anxious to find out more about the challenge presented by the tax reassessment lawsuit and the plans for securing new investment in the power plant.

Our goal is to provide all residents with accurate and complete information and the Task Force has been working on just that. In fact, as part of this effort, part of the Task Force met with LIPA officials today. In addition, we are engaged with our elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels. The recent election has shifted the landscape and we are still trying to fully understand the implications. Thus, we have decided to take more time before holding our "town hall" meeting.

We plan to make information available to the community later this week and on an ongoing basis as the Task Force continues its work. As always, we encourage community members to attend village and/or school board meetings to ask questions, voice concerns, and share ideas.

Margot Garant, Mayor, Port Jefferson

Mark Doyle, Vice-President, Board of Education

Dennis Kahn, Chair, Board of Education LIPA Committee
