Mayor Declares State of Emergency for Port Jeff

Village encourages voluntary evacuations and warns of severe flooding.

Mayor Margot Garant declared a state of emergency for the village of Port Jefferson on Friday in expectation of Hurricane Irene hitting the area on Sunday.

According to state law, an emergency declaration allows town leaders to declare such measures for their respective municipalities such as a curfew, evacuation zones, emergency shelters, and opening and closing of roads to the public, among others.

Due to the excepted landfall of Hurricane Irene, Mayor Garant declared a state of emergency today, Friday, August 26, 2011 at 2:35 PM

Residents are warned they may expect hurricane force winds, street flooding, downed trees, electrical outages, and potential storm surge in low-lying areas. The anticipated area of the storm surge includes the following Village streets: Beach Street, East and West Broadway, Barnum Ave, Wynn Lane, Maple Place, Mill Creek Road, Main Street, East Main Street, Arden Place, Traders Cove, Rossner Lane, Surf Ave. Brook Road. Chrystal Brook Hollow Road.

Residents of these areas should consider voluntary evacuations to friends and relatives outside these zones. In the event of a severe surge, a mandatory evacuation may be ordered.

The Inc. Village of Port Jefferson is cooperating with the, Port Jefferson Fire Department, Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance Corp, and Town of Brookhaven, in addressing this emergency. Information will be forthcoming as to the location of emergency shelters and other assistance. Residents are encouraged to check the Village and Town websites for updated information.
