Nor'easter Cancels FEMA, School Activites

Supervisor hopes FEMA will reschedule for later in the week.

The nor'easter expected to hit the South Fork on Wednesday afternoon has already caused some cancellations, including at schools, in the area.

The Federal Emergency Management Association officials were scheduled to arrive in East Hampton on Wednesday morning, but cancelled in light of the storm, according to Town Supervisor Bill Wilkinson.

FEMA officials were going to bring trailers to the Town Hall property to assist residents and business owners all over the East End who suffered damages during Hurricane Sandy.

"It's very important people get their questions answered," Wilkinson said. "Because it's a federal agency, I don't have the answers. It's just a great assistance to the residents to get their questions answered swiftly." He said he thought it was a "great coup" to have the trailers place in East Hampton to serve the region and "ease the burden of those who suffered from storm damage."

Wilkinson said FEMA may try to come on Friday, but he wasn't sure yet.

In the meantime, he said he is concerned what impact the nor'easter will have on the power lines. "I'm thankful that LIPA is still here," he said, referring to the staging area the Long Island Power Authority set up at the East Hampton Airport last week. "The immediacy of LIPA being within our town, as a staging area, is again extremely beneficial."

Other cancellations include:

  • East Hampton School District and Springs School District announced that all after school and evening activities have been cancelled.
  • Montauk School has early dismissal
  • All afternoon activities and evening activities including the Board of Education Meeting at the Sag Harbor UFSD are cancelled.
  • ARF will be closing to the public at 1 p.m. If East Hampton Town residents need emergency shelter for their cats or dogs, due to evacuation orders please call East Hampton Town Animal Control at 324-0085 and they will give you an ARF cell phone number to call for drop off. Residents have to bring their animals’ food, ID collar, leash and any medications their animal may be on.
