State Funds Port Jeff's 'Baker's Alley' Restoration

Village will build brick pathway to connect East Main Street to metered parking lot off East Broadway.

A state grant of $106,000 will give rise to construction of a new walking path along Port Jefferson's historic "Baker's Alley."

Port Jefferson village will receive a grant $106,000 from New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to move forward with plans to build a brick walkway in the historic alleyway that cuts between East Main Street and the parking lot off East Broadway, according to a story in The Port Record Times

The alleyway, which cuts between Pattern Finders and Home Again Treasures on Consignment on East Main Street, is nicknamed "Baker's Alley" referring to the early 19th century when bakeries reigned on East Main Street, leading to the bakery wars of 1916.  The old brick building sitting against the path was once "William West's New England Bakery."

The alleyway has since become overgrown and dusty trail rarely used by East Main Street visitors.

With the state's grant, and official permission from  Danfords Hotel and Marina, the village will be able to begin construction to restore the alleyway. The design calls for a step-down brick walkway with lights embedded in the steps, with a Dicken's style lamppost outside the former bakery's doors.

The village will match the state's grants using funds from the metered parking to complete the project.
