Route 347 Rebuilding Project Coming to Port Jefferson Station

Officials said the $25.6 million project will start soon.

A $25.6 million road reconstruction project to improve safety on Route 347 at Route 112 will begin soon, according to a report published Sunday in Newsday.

The project is the third in a three-phase series to improve safety and traffic flow on Route 347, which Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine called one of the busiest roads in Brookhaven. The project will include the addition of another lane, the addition of a jug handle to make left turns, improved drainage and landscaping, tree plantings and a new park to add appeal to the area.

"It's been a congestion nightmare. Anything we can do to improve traffic flow and green space is good," Romaine told Newsday.

This new road construction at Route 347 and Route 112 follows a project completed in 2011 that added center turning lanes, a raised center median, bike lanes, sidewalks, bus stops, shelters, landscaping and storm-water runoff filtration systems on various parts of Route 112, including within the Port Jefferson Station area.

During the most recent phase of construction on Route 347, which took place in Smithtown and Hauppauge, businesses suffered tremendously.
