Safety Improvements on the Way for Canal Road

State awards grant to Town of Brookhaven to fund traffic calming measures.

Sidewalks, traffic lights, left turn lanes and bike lanes are on the way on Canal Road thanks to a New York State Highway Safety Improvement Program grant awarded to the Town of Brookhaven, according to a report published in The Port Times Record.

It's the second phase of a traffic safety project on Canal Road, the design of which is still waiting on approval from the NYS Department of Transportation.

The grant comes by way of the federal government and totals $1.04 million, though the total amount of the project will be approximately $1.16 million. The Town of Brookhaven will incur the full amount but the grant refunds 90 percent; the remaining 10 percent will come from Brookhaven's "High Accident Locations" budget line.
