Speakers Address Homeless Issues at Civic Meeting

Ed Hernandez, the deputy commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Social Services and Lou Rabeno, a staff member at Pax Christi in Port Jefferson came to the Port Jefferson Station/Terryville Civic Association meeting at the on Tuesday night to speak about concerns residents have with the homeless population.

The Port Times Record reported in a story by Elana Glowatz on the meeting where the guest speakers addressed a room that the civic association’s website described as “very well attended leaving standing room only for those who arrived even just a few minutes late.”

"Suffolk County right now is suffering some of its worst homelessness," the newspaper reported Hernandez as saying, estimating there are about 500 homeless families and 250 to 300 homeless individuals in the county.

Rabeno talked about how the Pax Christi shelter operates, according to the report.

Various members of the community were on hand to voice their concerns about the homeless problem in Port Jefferson and Port Jefferson Station, especially around the train tracks on Route 112.
