Stony Brook Staffer Pitches Port Jefferson Clean-up

Noticing the wear and tear on the village, the academic advisor floats idea to Patch about involving students in giving the downtown a once-over.

Port Jefferson Village is showing signs of wear and tear, and one staffer from Stony Brook University is hoping she can enlist students to help give the area a spit shine.

"I was happy to see your photo report on the deteriorating sights in and around our once-beautiful village. I have lived in Port Jeff for 20 years and have noticed the wear and tear of the buildings, signs, curbs, etc.," wrote Lori Lyons, an academic advisor at the university, in an email to Patch.

Her idea? To create a "Port Jeff Pride Patrol" event that would coincide with the university's Earthstock week, which is devoted to eco-consciousness and beautification.

"Perhaps each business/landlord could provide the necessary supplies (paint, cleaning products, etc), and the volunteers from the Village (and/or students from the University?) could provide the elbow-grease! The Mayor could distribute waters, snacks etc.; or there could be a contest for most improved spot, etc.," she said.

Lyons said she plans to propose the idea to Mayor Margot Garant, but acknowledges that with Stony Brook's Earthstock celebration set for April 15, the timing might not be right to make this happen this year.

Garant told Patch that the village's business improvement district is planning on an Earth Day cleanup already for both Upper and Lower Port.

"The Beautification committee ... is planning new planters, flowers and new street banners as part of our 50th incorporation celebration," she said in an email.

So, while Lyons' idea right now is just that, an idea, we thought we'd give Port Jefferson locals a chance to weigh in. Would you support something like this in the village? Let us know in the comments.
