The Day JFK Was Shot: 'Everyone Was Totally Silent'

A half century later, the memories remain vivid; we'd love to hear yours.

Friday marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy.

For those of a certain age, the memories of that Friday afternoon on Nov. 22, 1963 are still vivid. It was a day that rocked a nation and broke our country's heart. We asked Patch readers to recall that day and share their memories of where they were when they heard the news that JFK had been shot. Here's some of the responses:

Carol Vogt Salvato I was a junior in High School and going home on bus everyone was totally silent. Even passing in the hallways it was silent!! Very sad day!

Gail Turner I was in 2nd grade ...we were on a field trip to see the new high school ,which was down the block from the elementary school, so we walked. On the way back to school a man was cementing the sidewalk...he told us the President had been shot. When we got back into school the principal told us over the intercom that JFK had died. WE all cried.

Mary Schnall I remember it like it was yesterday 4th grade Ms Linders class when the principal announced the terrible news. Signs were posted on the stores along Hemp Tpke in Franklin Square with the tragic news

Mary Schembre-Ross I was 5 years old. My Mom had all 7 kids gather around our one tv and get on our knees and pray for him. My mother was crying. It was something I will never forget.

Stuart Rachlin I was walking from HS to the bus to take me to my orthodontist...I heard it from a radio blaring from a NYC bar...could not believe it...was confirmed when I arrived at my destination.

Charlotte Svenstrup-Kneidl That awful day I was sitting in a school bus waiting to go to John Adams HS for a basketball game. It was my first game to cheer at. I was a Twirler.
