Village Gives Red Phone Booths a Makeover

Actual phones will be replaced with informational signs.

You've probably seen it many times: A group of people stop at one of the red phone booths and insists that someone get inside for a quick picture. Or perhaps you've seen a young couple hanging out near one getting their engagement picture taken.

You may have also noticed that the red phone booths on the corners of Main and East Main Streets in Port Jefferson were looking a little long in the tooth. You weren't the only one. The village has decided they needed to be shined up a bit.

According to Mayor Margot Garant, the booths are getting a makeover from a private company hired by the village at a cost of about $3,700 in total.

Information will be posted inside the booths on billboards and the top sign will be backlit and read "www.portjeff.com." Solar powered lights on top will be programmed to turn on at dusk and off at dawn.

As for the ability to make calls in the red phone booth, Garant says that those days are gone.

"No more phones," she said.
