Village Notebook: Village Loses Evergreen, Road Re-Striping, Water Main Fix

Happenings around the village of Port Jefferson.

Village Loses Evergreen Tree

The village government announced this week that the evergreen tree in front of village hall had to be cut down after it sustained too much damage in Hurricane Sandy and couldn't be saved. The tree had been used as a Christmas tree in many years past.

"It is with deep regret that we had to cut down our 'beloved' evergreen from the front lawn of Village Hall," the announcement read. "Unfortunately during Hurricane Sandy the top of the tree was snapped off and the entire tree went into shock and died as a result. We have been advised that this was a fire hazard and had the tree taken down."

The village is hoping to replace the tree with a donated tree to "grow and nurture."

Road Re-Striping to Take Place This Weekend

Roads throughout Port Jefferson village will be re-striped with yellow lines by Town of Brookhaven crews on May 18 and May 19. White striping will be done on or around June 1. "Please proceed with caution throughout the Village as the crews are working," the village said in its announcement.

Water Main to be Fixed

After a leak was discovered in the water main near the entrance to Harborfront Park, village officials announced Friday that repairs will begin on Monday, May 20. They said via the village website that the work will impact the entrance to the park, though workers will try to keep one lane open. "Please be patient in the event access is not available for a portion of time," the announcement reads.
