Village Reminds Residents, Business Owners to Clear Sidewalks as Winter Storm Heads to Port Jefferson

Map of village owned sidewalks released by Port Jefferson to clear up confusion as a second major winter storm pushes its way into the area.

The National Weather Service has a winter storm watch in effect today from 7 p.m. this evening until Wednesday at 6 p.m. There will be heavy snow at times with accumulation upwards of 10 to 15 inches and wind gusts up to 35 mph.  The heaviest snow is expected after midnight tonight into early Wednesday.

The Weather Service is warning of hazardous travel for tonight and throughout the day. They advise that people only travel in emergencies and if you must travel you should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle.

The village of Port Jefferson is already prepping for the snow. After the holiday blizzard a couple of weeks ago, as to who was responsible for clearing some of the sidewalks in town. The village web page has now published a few helpful links to clear things up.

According to a statement on the website all other sidewalks in the village are the responsibility of the owners of the parcels of land adjacent to those sidewalks.

According to Port Jefferson Chief Constable Wally Tomaszewski if a snow storm is forecast, then the code officers go out to hand out notices warning people to clear their sidewalks and move vehicles off the roadways.

Code officers will issue summonses if the sidewalk is not cleared within 24 hours of the initial warning carrying fines of up to $250.

For people who are handicapped or elderly and need assistance clearing walkways, the village asks those individuals to call Village Hall to register their property.
