Area Schools Announce Closings Due to Storm

Port Jefferson, Mt. Sinai and Comsewogue all closed Monday and Tuesday.

Port Jefferson, Mt. Sinai and Comsewogue school districts have all announced that school will be closed on Monday and Tuesday due to Hurricane Sandy. All activities before and after school are also cancelled.

At Port Jefferson, Superintendent Ken Bossert also reported to residents that Mayor Margot Garant requested he remind people to stay at home and out of the downtown area because extensive flooding is expected.

"Please take all necessary steps to keep you and your family safe," Bossert said.

Mt. Sinai Sperintendent Enrico Conchetti said that safe bussing would be a problem in the storm.

"The national highway and traffic administration does not advise school bus operations for sustained wind of 35 MPH or greater," he said.

Most districts have said they will evaluate on Tuesday night if schools will be able to reopen on Wednesday.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall along Southern New Jersey on Monday, but the enormous storm, dubbed "Frankenstorm" by meteorologists, threatens much of the East Coast.
