Comsewogue Hosting Common Core Forum For Community

District hosts common core forum to bring a dialogue to the forefront.

The new common core standards have caused many parents, teachers, students, and community members to become frustrated. Between the new standards, the implementation, the modules, and the tests -- parents are left confused and angry.

Incase you haven't heard, the Common Core State Standards Initiative is a country-wide education initiative that seeks to "bring diverse state curricula into alignment with each other by following the principals of standards-based education reform."

However, many parents who are on the front line of this new initiative are saying it is causing more harm that good. Many of those parents participated in a picketing movement held in front of Senator John Flanagan's office as a way to show their disapproval. However, this protest didn't include a forum where people could get together and speak their mind on Common Core and discuss what is working and what needs to be changed. That is where Comsewogue comes in.

The district hopes to have a friendly discussion by hosting it's own Common Core Forum on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. at the high school auditorium. According to the flyer, the idea behind the forum is simple: "[It's] a time for parents to talk and to listen to parents, get answers to questions, and be better informed."

The district said it will hold an open meeting and welcomes anyone from surrounding communities to attend.
