Comsewogue School Board Race: Candidate Chris McCrary

Chris McCrary is one of four people running for a seat on the Comsewogue school board.

Chris McCrary is a parent of three children in the Comsewogue school district who said he has been contemplating a run for school board for a long time.

McCrary is an AP biology teacher in the Riverhead school district, and has completed an administrative internship as part of his state certification up to the level of superintendent.

"I think I have a kind of unique perspective being that I’m a teacher myself, I’m a parent and I’ve also seen the administrative side," he said. "I understand what the parents are concerned about and I understand what the teachers are concerned about as well."

McCrary said he plans on supporting the proposed school budget, saying, "I feel that the budget they came in with this year was within reason."

He said the district's primary challenge in the coming years will be a fiscal one, with the tax cap and other issues like rising health care costs complicating the school funding process.

"It’s going to change some things in the budget in the near future," he said. "We're here for the students first and that should be our main priority."
