Enrollment, Test Scores Waver in Port Jeff, Comsewogue Schools

New York State School Report Card issued Thursday highlights results on Regents, average class size.

A state report released Thursday shows enrollment sliding in the  while staying relatively flat in the , which includes students from Port Jefferson Station.

According to the The New York State School Report Card for 2009-2010, enrollment in Port Jefferson dropped to 1,196 in 2010, compared to 1,287 students in the 2008-2009 school year and 1,207 in the 2004-2005 school year.

In Comsewogue, enrollment held steady, with 3,963 students for 2009-2010 compared to 3,921 in 2008-2010 and 3,946 in the 2004-2005 school year.

The average class size also slid in Port Jefferson to 18 students, compared to 21 in the prior school year. Meanwhile, in Comsewogue, average class size held steady at 22 students per class, maxing out at 25 students in Grade 10 English classes.

But aside from the obvious size differences, demographics between the two neighboring districts vary as well.

In Comsewogue, 78 percent of the population is white, 16 percent Hispanic, 3 percent black and 3 percent Asian. Also, 16 percent of students qualify for reduced-price or free lunch.

That's a stark contrast to Port Jefferson, where 91 percent are white, 5 percent Asian, 3 percent Hispanic and 1 percent are black. In that district, 5 percent are eligible for free or discounted lunch.

The report also breaks down graduation rates, reading levels and test scores for the two districts.

In Port Jefferson, where all 86 members of its senior class graduated, 97 percent of high school students passed the Comprehensive English Regents exam, 89 percent passed the Integrated Algebra Regents and 85 percent passed the Chemistry Regents. Out of its graduating class, 98 percent received a Regents diploma.

After graduation, 74 percent of students planned to enter a four-year college, 22 percent a two-year college, and 2 percent entered the job market.

Comsewogue saw 295 seniors graduate in 2010, with 7 drop-outs. As for the Regents exams, 92 percent passed the English exam, 82 percent passed Integrated Algebra and 83 percent passed Chemistry. At that district, 89 percent earned a Regents diploma.

The college enrollment was dramatically different, with 39 percent planning to attend a four-year school and 47 percent planning to enter a two-year school. About 5 percent of the class planned to enter the job market, while 2 percent joined the military.
