Frey Resigns From Port Jeff School Board, Cites Health Issues

After accident last year, former board President Robert Frey was frequently missing from meetings.

Robert Frey, who served both as president and vice-president of the Port Jefferson School Board resigned on Friday in order to put more focus on rehabilitating from an accident he suffered overseas last year, according to a statement released by the school district.

Frey’s term was set to end on June 30, 2012, his sixth year of service and the second of two three-year terms.

According to the school district, the board now has three options to address the vacancy. They can appoint a replacement until the next trustee election is held on May 15, they can hold a special election to complete the term or they can leave the seat vacant until the next election. The decision will be made at the next board meeting on Nov. 8.

Superintendent Ken Bossert said that even though hadn’t worked with Frey very long his “commitment to our community and its students was strongly evident.”

“I am sorry that I will not have the ability to work with him as a board member, but I do hope that he remains active with our schools in the coming years,” he said.
