Helping Hands in Port Jeff Elementary School

Students assemble a wreath of good deeds in class.

Little hands can made a big impact. That's what students in Darleen Wells’ second-grade class at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School learned in a class room project this month. The children assembled a wreath made of little green handprints each one enscribed with a good deed they would pledge to complete in the month of December.

Inspired by their work, the kids then took action and completed two projects to help others.

The kids put together care packages for our troops serving overseas. Along with essential items like soap, eye drops, sunblock and shaving cream they included personal notes cards that expressed sentiments of well wishes and crafted ornaments to accompany the packages, which will be sent to soldiers who are serving overseas.

They also collected books for patients in the  part in the pediatric unit of St. Charles Hospital as a part of the "Books to Make Children Smile" program.

"They donated books that they felt would make ill children feel better during their stay," said a school spokesperson. "As a personal touch, students wrote notes to the recipients, placed in the books’ inside covers, which described why they enjoyed the story and how it made them smile."
