The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Science Olympiad team continued its tradition of success at the annual state Science Olympiad competition by placing a team within the top 30 last weekend, the school announced this week.
The team, which took third place at the Suffolk County Regional Science Competition in February, was led by a number of top-15 finishers:
7th Place – Ryan Burke and Eric Kilgore for Fermi Questions
7th Place – Alberto Rescia and Natasha Zaliznyak for Remote Sensing
11th Place – Eric Kilgore and Alberto Rescia for Geologic Mapping
13th Place – Danielle Grier and Kent Ueno for Chemistry Lab
13th Place – Zachary Graziano and Leah Neiman for Designer Genes
15th Place – Ryan Burke and Kent Ueno for Elastic Launched Glider
“Just being there made them all winners,” said Laurie McMillen, who coaches the team along with Adam Bouchard and Michel Krivosta. “Everyone had a good time, learned a lot and is looking forward to next year’s competition.”
More than 50 school districts participated in the state championships.
