Kids Meet Heroes At Local Book Fair

Real life heroes came out to speak with kids at the PTA Book Fair Family Night.

The Port Jefferson PTA used the theme of heroes to highlight the importance of fictional protagonists in books and the real life heroes all around us to inspire kids at the "Here's To Our Heros! Reading Saves the Day" family night and book fair on Thursday evening. Children and parents came down to Edna Louise Spear Elementary School for the Scholastic book fair to buy books and meet with a line up of heroes who spoke to the children and explained what they do for a living.

Among the heroes who spoke with the kids were Nurse Carrie Simunek, Dr. Jason Kronberg, Fireman Tim Johnston and Detective Jason Spiller. Kids asked questions and the heroes told them about their jobs. While the adventures of characters like Harry Potter are probably very familiar to the children, the night provided a unique opportunity to get to learn what it takes to be a real hero.

Proceeds from the book fair go to support PTA sponsored events throughout the year. PTA president Jill Nees said the fair was "extremely successful."
