Lax Kids Thank School For Chance to Play

Kids who will benefit from the fielding of a lacrosse team this spring thanked Dr. Riley and the school board.

A few young lacrosse players from Port Jefferson presented Dr. Riley and the school board with a giant note of thanks for supporting their efforts to field a team this Spring.

The thank you note featured photos of each team in the youth lacrosse league in Port Jefferson. This league is not associated with the school but they support the fielding of the school's Middle School team in hopes that the popular sport will eventually become a part of the district's regular sports program. The note also featured signatures of the kids and handwritten notes of thanks.

The kids are excited to start playing lacrosse on a school team in the Middle School this Spring after a over months of school board meetings. Board members, concerned that cuts to the school budget were iminent because of a , vascilated on , but finally on the basis that it not cost the school any addiitonal funds from the existing budget. Some of the costs will be offset by a booster club dedicated to the lacrosse team that has promised to raise $5,000.

Karen Sullivan whose son Connor plays in the youth lacrosse league and is in third grade said that fielding the lacrosse team for the Middle School helps lift spirits during a time of great uncertainty in the district.

"Ultimately as a community we all want healthy, happy and educated children," said Sullivan.

The group of boys who presented the note were some of the 80 boys who will be participating in the youth spring lacrosse league this year. This league is not supported by the district. The youth lacrosee league of Port Jefferson will be fielding 5 teams this spring, including a seventh grade tournament team. The girls program this year plans on fielding three additional teams.
