Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Raquel Saenz

Our selection for Whiz Kids of this week is Raquel Saenz who won the "Hispanic Heritage Month" essay contest grand prize of $5,000.

Name: Raquel Saenz

Accomplishment: Grand prize high school winner of Power to Learn’s third annual “Hispanic Heritage Month” essay contest. Raquel read her essay at an awards ceremony attended by Rep. Tim Bishop D-Southampton, school officials and representatives from Cablevision, one of the the contest's sponsors along with Olympusat, Inc., distributor of Spanish language television channels.

Raquel was awarded a $5,000 savings bond and a $2,500 donation was made in her name to Adelante of Suffolk County, an Hispanic cultural organization.

Key to Awesomeness: In her essay Raquel explains how her empathy for a little boy in her third grade class led her to discover how important her Hispanic heritage really was as it let her give comfort to someone whom she was uniquely able to help.

“We are extremely proud of Raquel and all that she has accomplished," said Comsewogue High School Principal Joe Coniglione. "She is a true role model for teens today."
