Inspired by Story, Port Jeff Kindergartners Give Warmth

Students from Port Jefferson elementary school collect mittens for the poor.

After reading Candace Christiansen’s book, "The Mitten Tree" this holiday season, kindergartners in Melissa Martin’s class at were inspired to decorate a holiday tree with mittens and other warm accessories to give to a community shelter.

According to the school district the story the children read is about an "old, lonely woman who depleted her yarn supply after knitting mittens for all the children at a bus stop, only to find a basket full of yarn at her doorstep."

"The students really enjoyed collecting these gifts for less fortunate people," Martin said. "They learned the importance of being kind and compassionate, the lesson that was taught in Christiansen’s book and a lesson they will carry throughout life."
