The first day of school got off to a soppy start. It was raining C-A-T-S and D-O-G-S as the kids climbed aboard big yellow busses to start another year of reading, writing and arithmetic.

In spite of the rain, at Port Jefferson they said that it was all smiles. A statement from the school said students began showing up at and around 7:15 a.m. to get a head start on their day.

"The schools’ faculty and staff, along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, greeted the children as they entered the building," the statment said. "Students at received a similar warm welcome later in the morning as they began their academic year."
