Port Jeff Student Participates in SCMEA Day of Horn

Hundreds of French Horns assembled for world record holding concert.

When hundreds of musicians assembled at the 7th Annual Suffolk County Music Educators Association (SCMEA) Day of Horn this year, student Joseph Kaming-Thanassi was there to toot his French Horn along with them.

According to Alan Orloff, one of the event's organizers, 251 participants took part in the Day of Horn this year. Students made up the bulk of the performers at 226, while the rest were teachers, professionals and guests.

"However, they don't count if they didn't play a horn," joked Orloff.

At the fifth annual concert, the event broke the record for the world's largest horn ensemble of 264 horns and is listed in the 2012 Guiness Book of World Records. The Day of Horn was held on Jan. 13 at Commack Middle School this year and featured a horn clinic by accomplished musician and music teacher, Linda Kimball, a dinner and a free horn concert for the public.
