Port Jefferson Schools Considering Energy Upgrades

Costs to update school's energy technology would run over $1 million but save $100,000 per year.

An new proposal before the school board could save Port Jefferson School District money in the long run and use less energy but the costs are steep, according to a report in the Port Times Record on Thursday.

The paper reported that the school board heard from director of facilities for Port Jefferson schools Fred Koelbel about entering into a contract with an energy management company to help the district upgrade its energy systems to the latest technology to control costs and lower electricity usage.

"The suggested upgrades would cost the district more than $1.4 million dollars to install," the paper reported but Koelbel said that it "will put us in better control of our buildings."
