Report: Harassment May Have Been Issue in Fiore Firing

A report on SeaWolvesNation says several woman brought complaints to independent mediators outside the athletics department regarding Stony Brook Athletic Director, Jim Fiore.

Harassment may have been an issue in the recent firing of Stony Brook University Athletic Director Jim Fiore according to recent online news report.

Fiore was abruptly let go from the university Tuesday night by university president Samuel L. Stanley who announced the move in an email sent out to the campus community that same night. Fiore’s remaining 31 months on his contract was bought out by the university for nearly $800,000.

Michael Conte, Fiore’s media representative said the firing did not involve disciplinary action and told Newsday “this was not a mutual decision”

In Stanley’s letter to the campus community, no specific reason was given for Fiore’s sudden dismissal, but a report on SeaWolvesNation said the firing was the result of repeated harassment allegations.

According to the report, several university officials, who spoke with SeaWolvesNation on the condition of anonymity, are on coaching staffs within the university who brought their complaints to independent mediators outside the athletics department. Their identities remain confidential and according to the report, no formal grievances were filed by the women and no formal charges were filed by the university.

Conte told SeaWolvesNation that there would be no comment from Fiore unless it was specifically acknowledged who was making the complaint. Conte, in the report, disputes the version of events and said they are “somewhat belied by the fact that the university didn’t bring charges against [Fiore].”

No further comments or information has been released on Fiore’s departure since Wednesday.
