Senator LaValle Asks Commissioner To Delay Common Core Standards

Senator Ken LaValle took a hard stance against the new rigorous standards known as the Common Core. LaValle spoke to the New York State Education Committee on Thursday pleading with them to re-evaluate the Common Core and delay it. 

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an education initiative that details what K-12 students should know in English language arts and mathematics at the end of each grade. The initiative was designed to establish consistent education standards across the states as well as ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter two or four-year college programs or enter the workforce.

However, the standards have been highly criticized by parents, teachers, and students as "completely unnecessary" and too "pressure filled." Apparently, LaValle agrees.

According to LaValle's website, he spoke to the committee and asked New York State Commissioner John King to delay “Common Core” implementation. “Going back to the initial meeting on Long Island last April, it appears that the Department of Education is not listening.  The rollout of Common Core has been flawed, and children are being hurt," said LaValle. 

"There is an immediate need for something to happen since the process has collapsed.  I would like the commissioner to hit the delay button today.”

The committee was unavailable for comment in time for publication.
