Sports Notebook: Juniors Carry Softball Team to First Win For Comsewogue

Juniors roll as Warriors gain first softball victory and both girls and boys lacrosse teams put one in the win column during spring break week.

The Comsewogue Warriors softball team finally won their first game of the 2011 season – a 15-2 mercy rule thrashing of Mercy at Stotzky Park in Riverhead Wednesday afternoon. It was the Warriors future team, five juniors to be precise, which led them to victory.

Not only was it Comsewogue’s first win of the season, albeit a non-league win, it was the most runs scored by the Warriors in any single game this year. Their previous best was 10 runs scored against North Babylon on opening day, a game the Warriors lost 11-10.

“Coming after an 0-6 start it was nice to get a win,” said Comsewogue head coach Tom Frawley. “But right now the biggest mystery we have is why our gloves are failing. In the Centereach game the week before we committed 11 errors. Right now we have only five kids carrying the whole team.”

Comsewogue junior pitcher Meghan Zimbler picked up the complete game victory for the Warriors going five strong innings, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run. Anna Crowley took the loss for Mercy.

Zimbler not only had a big day in the pitching circle but at the plate too, going 4-5 with three runs batted in. Reigning All League catcher and fellow junior Hope Reindl went 4-4 with four RBI and yet another junior, Alex Dovicsak, went 3-3 with a pair of runs batted in.

“I felt like the pitching on both teams was equal,” said Reindl. “But we were able to shake up their pitcher in the third and that really built up our confiedence.”

The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With two outs Alex Dovicsak doubled, her sister Alisha then singled to put runners on first and third. Senior Katie Ford then tripled into the left-centerfield gap plating the Alex and Alisha.

The Warriors broke the game open for good in the third and again it was the Dovicsak girls who started things off with singles. Hope Reindl then tripled into the left-centerfield gap scoring the Dovicsak girls again. Zimbler followed, helping her own cause with a lined single up the middle driving in Reidl for a 5-0 Comsewogue lead. The route was on.

“It felt awesome to get the win,” said Zimbler. “It was great to see the girls hitting and fielding well. It was very comforting.”

The win improved the Warriors record to 1-7 and moved them ahead of winless (0-7) Copiague in the overall League IV standings. Mercy fell to 4-5.

Comsewogue will try and extend their hot hand this week when they visit 5-2 Smithtown West Tuesday afternoon before returning home Wednesday to take on 0-8 Newfield then take to the road again to face 3-5 West Islip on Friday.

“I think that we still have a shot at the playoffs,” said Frawley. “We’re just betraying ourselves right now. There are still teams to play that I’m pretty optimistic about.”

“We’ve shown that we can do it,” said Zimbler, “and I think that we have the talent to do it. This win will be good for us for the rest of the season.”

Reindl agreed: “If we can win tomorrow against Smithtown West this week I think it will give us some momentum for the rest of the season,”

High school sports action was limited last week due to spring break but both the boy’s and girl’s lacrosse teams were still able to add to their successful seasons. The Warriors manhandled Babylon 18-4 Wednesday afternoon. Connor Russell notched seven goals and Doug Foley picked up a hat trick to pace the Comsewogue attack. The win improves the Warriors’ overall record to a perfect 7-0.

The Lady Warriors were equally impressive in their 11-6 win over Kings Park last Monday. Comsewogue broke open a 3-3 halftime tie with an eight goal second half while limiting Kings Park to just three scores. Nine different players tallied goals for the Warriors. Michelle Rubino, Marykate McCormick and Taylor Fischer each scored a pair of goals for Comsewogue. The Warriors overall record improved to a stunning 8-1. The Warriors have scored 11 goals in each of their last three games and tallied double digit goals in all but one game this year. Not surprisingly that game resulted in their only loss of the season – 9-6 to Mt. Sinai on April 1.

Finally, the Comsewogue Warriors girls track team won their second meet of the year with a 92-58 win over Deer Park. Samantha Kane took first place honors in the discus and came in second in the shot put. Rachael Colasanto won both the high jump and the long jump for the Warriors. Comsewogue is now 2-1.
