Twelve Local Students Qualify For National Merit Scholarship

Three students from Comsewogue and eight from Port Jefferson High School made the grade.

had three students entered the National Merit Scholarship program and saw eight kids qualify. More than 50,000 students who participated nationally made the grade out of 1.5 million entrants. These students will go on to the National Merit Semi-Finals where about 16,000 will be picked and the rest will become commended students.

According to the organization’s website the annual competition identifies academically talented high school students for undergraduate college scholarship programs.

A statement by the Comsewogue school district said the students may be referred to two colleges in which they are especially interested in attending.

“These academically talented students are to be commended for their high level of achievement,” said Maria Rianna, the former Assistant Superintendent of Port Jefferson School District. “They have worked hard and such recognition can not only help them to continue their efforts but can motivate others to do the same.”
