Whiz Kids: Port Jeff Math Team Wins Competition at Stony Brook

First and second place wins for individual and team competitors.

Students from the Math Team in Port Jefferson went up against about 250 other students at the Math Olympiads at Stony Brook University on Tuesday, May 15 and came home with first and second place wins in both the team and individual competitions, according to Paige Lohmann, a teacher advisor.

In the individual competition the students had 30 minutes to complete 10 questions. Out of about 250 students in Suffolk County in the competition, fourth-grader Annalisa Welinder took first place overall. Fourth-grader Mayu Takeuchi captured second place overall.

In the team competition, students also had 30 minutes to complete 10 questions. Port Jefferson had two teams who tool first and second place in the fourth and fifth grade categories out of about 50 Suffolk County teams overall.
