Brandon Escobar Leaves for London to Chase Olympic Glory

Rocky Point's Escobar set to wrestle for Honduras in the 2012 Olympic Games.

After and months of training, Rocky Point's Brandon Escobar left Monday for London to begin his Olympic Journey.

Escobar will wrestle for Team Honduras, where his parents are originally from, and is wrestling as one of the world's top nineteen 55kg freestyle wrestlers. His competition is one of the last of these Olympic games, beginning on August 10.

The last week before leaving, Escobar trained in Setauket with a strength & conditioning coach, at the NY Athletic Club in the City and with X-cel Wrestling at Eastport-South Manor HS, according to Nancy Troisi who helps run the Brandon Escobar 2012 Olympian Facebook page.

His progress and updates can be tracked on that Facebook page, and Troisi said many local bars plan on holding viewing parties for Escobar's event, which Patch will announce.

Escobar will now be training with his Honduran Coach, Humberto Torres, and will practice with other freestyle Olympians in his weight class.

This is great regional news for Long Island? Why the hell should we care about this Escobar, he's training here using our resources, only to compete for another country! I can't for the life of me figure how LI should be proud of this guy.......No wonder why America is failing!

Jim...Brandon is a graduate of Rocky Point High School, so this is great regional news for Long island. He is competing for Honduras but training in the US. In what way is he using our resources? The US taxpayer does not fund him in any way.
