Fencing Coach Nets 150th Straight Win

In 2001, Jennie Salmon began coaching the girls' varsity fencing team at . Now Salmon, of Mt. Sinai, is the owner of one of the longest winning streaks in Long Island high school sports history: 150 straight wins.

On Monday, when her team defeated Huntington by a score of 22-5 to reach the milestone, Salmon's reaction was excitement.

"I think for us, persistance is the key to excellence," said Salmon, who is also a coach at in Rocky Point. "It's just working hard, not losing sight of our short term goals as far as technique and how we execute our actions, and then coming together as a team supporting each other."

The previous record for consecutive wins in fencing was held by Jeff Wolfe at Brentwood High School; Wolfe is now a part time assistant coach at Ward Melville.

Salmon's 150-meet win streak comes with 10 straight Suffolk County and Long Island Championships.
