Field Hockey Goalie From Port Jeff Station Ranks Number One in Nation For Saves

Kristen Znaniecki had 11.09 saves per game as goalkeeper for Mercy College field hockey team.

Among Division II field hockey goalkeepers, Kristen Znaniecki, of Port Jefferson Station, was ranked number one with 11.09 saves per game in the 2011 season while playing for Mercy College as a sophomore.

According to the Mercy College website, Znaniecki logged 770 minutes for the team this season and stopped 122 shots on goal in 11 games.

Last season, as a freshman player, Znaniecki started in all 13 games and had reached double digits saves six times including one game where she stopped 22 shots against Seton Hill.

Znaniecki said that she feels great about this season’s ranking calling it "a big accomplishment" but she’s also looking forward to her entire team getting there as well.

The Mercy field hockey team went 0 -13 for the 2011 season, according to the standings listed on the NCAA website.

"We have our heads held up high for the year to come," she said.

Znaniecki first started playing field hockey in seventh grade for Comsewogue School District and was named to the All-Division Team in field hockey in 2009. She also played lacrosse in Comsewogue and was named to All-Division Teams in that sport from 2008 through 2010. She received the Most Outstanding Female Athlete Award in 2010.

At Mercy she majors in Health Science and Physical Therapy and hopes to return home to Long Island eventually to work as a physical therapist.
