Fishing Report: Bass in Middle Grounds, Buoy 11 but Flukes Still Short

Same old story: the flukes are short but it's still fun out there on the Sound.

The water temperature was between 71 and 73 degrees when hookedup625 headed over to Port Jefferson to fish this weekend.

“Trolled both the front and the back of the harbor without any success,” he wrote in a report on July 18. “Did manage to feed most of the worms to hungry porgies. They do know how to steal those worms from the end of the tubes.”

When the tide started to move again he headed back to Mount Sinai.

“We tried two more sets as we headed back to Mt. Sinai and managed two short bass on each set.,” he said. “With the worms in short supply, we had two left, a third set produced a nice 30-inch bass for Scott.”

He also managed to land a 29-inch bass on the “fourth and last set of the day.”

“All the bass I have caught this year were landed with red and black tubes I made over the winter,” he said.

sent us this reat photo of John DeFranco with his bass that weighed in at 16 1/2 pounds on July 10.

“Caught at buoy 11 on clams,” she reported.

She also reported to Patch that the days were “kind of quiet due to the heat” but on Sunday the porgies were “abundant, in and out of the harbor and a nice size.”

She said that there are lots of fluke around but mostly shorts. She said they did see a few nice keepers up to 5 pounds.

“Donald Floyd caught the 5 lb fluke down by buoy 9,” she said. “Tons of blues around (cocktail size).”

Candy reports that there “should be bass and big blues starting to show up in middle grounds.”

Still she said that “you can have a ball with the kids catching and releasing but still haven't seen a school of bigger fish move in yet.”

“Hope to see that happen soon,” she reported.

The Celtic Quest reported on its website on Sunday that it was “a bit of a hard week.” They’re also reporting more of the same. There’s action with the fluke “but the keeper ratio is way down from what it was.”

“Some nice keepers here and there, but way off from what it was,” Captain Desmond reported. “Porgie fishing has been very hit and miss, as often happens this time of year for a week or two.”

Both Captain Desmond and Candy Caraftis commented on the great weather we’re having in their reports and that it’s a great time to enjoy the water whether it’s fishing, tubing or swimming.

“The weather has been great though and the kids are still having a great time reeling fish in,” Captain Desmond reported.
