Also this week, fishing caps off to Caraftis, celebrating its 60th anniversary in business.

Candy Caraftis started off her report by saying that “there are porgies abundant at Old Field and Crane Neck.”

She also said that there are cocktail blues out there.

“Two to three pounds at buoy 11,” she said.

You want the fluke? According to Caraftis, the fluke are “right outside Port Jefferson inlet in 17 to 40 feet of water.”

“Fluke fishing is still producing lots of short fluke but there are quite a few keepers out there as well,” she said. “Bass are at buoy 11 and off local area beaches.”

Candy said that bunker chunks, fresh or frozen and clams and diamond jigging are all working.

Not so incidentally, this is 60th year in business. One of the oldest businesses in Port Jeff besides the ferry.

“We have been family owned and operated since 1951,” said Candy. “Before we owned the business it was started in 1914 and Wally Bull owned it before us.”

Didn’t know all that. We may have to head down to Caraftis and ask a few more questions. (How about some old photos too Candy?)

Speaking of pictures. Candy did send a couple of current pics.

Kim Haas, a Three Village resident, posed under the tent at Caraftis with her 4 lb. fluke. Mitch Holsan and his friend came up with with three keepers up to 5 1/2 lbs.

On Wednesday, fishenmission reported that he had an “excellent day of fluke fishing.”

“Enjoyed some nice size fish and one huge porgy,” he said.

He and his friends ended the day with 6 keepers to 25 inches at 6.2 lbs.

Capjgt58 headed out to the Port Jeff/Sound Beach area and had lots of fun “with many Fluke but all went back in the pond.”

“The Fluke bite was not real hot but if you had tide moving you could find the fish,” he reported.

The Celtic Quest “beat the porgies” on Tuesday night according to Captain Desmond on his Facebook page.

“Very good trip,” he said. “Excellent diamond jigging for bass and blues on the 9 -1 p.m. trip.”

On Friday, Captain Amanda got the wake up call at 6:44 a.m.

“My phone rang,” she reported. “’Amanda sorry but were going to need you to come down we have a good crowd.’ I laid in bed for 30 more seconds clutching my pillow thinking about all of my chores, laundry and errands that aren't going to get done again today before sprinting out the door to the boat.”

She was glad she got that call when the Osprey V loaded up with 43 keeper fluke.

“High hook was Tom of the Long Island Sharks,” she reported. “Honorable mention to Terri who landed 2 fish over 6 lbs. making all the boys jealous.”

She said it was a “great trip to work deck for a change and spend some quality time with really good people.”

“I love seeing these local fluke just out side the front door,” she said.
