Fishing Report: Watch the Debris From Irene

Harbormaster in Port Jefferson bringing in lots of debris.

Many of the anglers heading out of Mt. Sinai and Port Jefferson harbors are reporting seeing lots of debris still in the water. Candy Caraftis from said that she saw the harbor master "bringing in quite a bit."

Eric Huner, a fisherman from East Setauket, said that when he went out fishing on Saturday, the "water in close to shoreline was dirty and muddy with lots of trash and debris."

If you're heading out boating or fishing on the Sound, there's still a chance that debris is rolling around the waterways so be aware.

While Irene is a thankfully a fading memory for many (with others unfortunately still dealing with the tree branches and insurance claims) the fishing has been good since the storm, according to Caraftis.

"Plenty of porgies and bass and blues are in the middle grounds," she said. "Diamond jigging, trolling umbrella rigs and some guys are bunker chunking."

Huner said he went out fishing on Saturday and said the conditions were "pretty rough, tough to fish."

"Managed to troll six big blues and a 17 lb. bass, 37 inches," he reported. "Did some diamond jigging and some blues also (3-6 lb class.)"

He also caught three porgies bottom fishing with clam.

"Mainly to try for some porgies to be used as live bait," he said.

On the list of unusual fish this summer we've heard of a , and according to Caraftis, "a few people caught some blow fish this weekend and were thrilled to see them."

"They haven't been around in years," she said.

Anglers reported sea bass were caught while fishing for porgies as well.
