Lady Royals Win LI Crown, Fall to Haldane In Super Regional Finals

The Port Jefferson softball team won the Long Island Class C Title, but later in the day lost to Haldane 6-1 in the Super Regional

A terrific season, which culminated in a school-record fourth straight Suffolk County Class C championship as well as a four straight Long Island Class championship title victory last week, came to an end for the Port Jefferson softball team at Bellport Martha Avenue Field on Tuesday afternoon as the Lady Royals lost 6-1 to Haldane in the final game of the Class C Super Regional tournament.

The Lady Royals played two games in the championship. They won their first game against the Friends Academy Quakers. Then Port took on the Haldane Blue Devils, which they lost.

Port Jefferson played a near perfect game against Nassau County Class C champion Friends Academy and they won easily 14-0 to capture its fourth straight Long Island Class C championship. Against Friends Academy, the team moved runners around the bases both early and often, scoring in every inning and the stellar pitching of standout junior starting pitcher Michiko McGivney, who scattered five hits over seven innings, was too much for the Quakers to handle. Homeruns off the bats of freshman infielder Morgan Sakovich and senior shortstop Renee Marchewka highlighted Port’s offensive attack.

The Lady Royals (18-4 overall) could not find the spark needed to get to Haldane’s ace pitcher Chelsea Lisikatos. The Blue Devils (20-1 overall) snapped a 0-0 tie in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead and was able to withstand Port Jefferson’s batting order, which began the game swinging red-hot bats.Marchewka scored Port Jefferson’s only run in the 6-1 loss to Haldane after getting a single and scoring on an error.

The Lady Royals will lose several key players to graduation this spring, including Marchewka, a senior captain as well as pitcher/outfielder Mollie Gibson (senior captain), centerfielder Anastasia Lennon, infielder/outfielder Denise Nunez and pitcher/outfielder Joy Morrison.

Fortunately for Port Jefferson, Marchewka, a multi-talented pitcher and hitter who was one of the top underclassmen on Long Island this season, leads a solid nucleus which includes Sakovich, infielder Courtney Fee, pitcher/outfielder Melissa Darling and infielder/outfielder Claudia DiCalogero.

An unprecedented fifth straight Suffolk and Long Island Class C championship will be a goal, not a dream, because Port Jefferson’s softball program, led by head coach Deborah Sue Edgar-Brown and junior varsity coach Kristin Britt is one of the finest in New York State.
