Sports Notebook: Lady Royals Softball Wins Class C Championship

Also, the Port Jefferson baseball team lost in the semifinals.

The Port Jefferson softball team, led by junior pitcher Michiko McGivney and senior centerfielder Anastasia Lennon, defeated Pierson/Bridgehampton 6-4 on Tuesday evening to win the Suffolk County Class C championship two-games to zero in the best-of-three-games series.

Playing at Pierson, the Lady Royals led 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, only to see the Lady Whalers surge back and tie the game 4-4 to send the game to extra innings. Port Jeff (15-3 overall) didn’t waste any time in responding with an offensive strike, scoring twice in the top of the eighth inning as Lennon’s sharp single off Pierson starting pitcher Melanie Stafford scored senior Denise Nunez with the go-ahead run and McGivney’s long double allowed Lennon to race home for an insurance run.

“Michiko’s a player we need on base and she’s quick on the bases,” said Lady Royals head coach Deborah Sue Edgar-Brown. Once again, McGivney didn’t disappoint.
