Warriors Baseball and Softball Finding the Right Notes at Last

Comsewogue baseball hitting its stride as softball playing seems inspired by lost teammate.

It’s taken nearly the entire 2011 baseball season but the Comsewogue Warriors appear to be finally hitting their stride. Better late than never, right? The 4-11 Warriors have posted a 3-2 record over their last five games as they head into the season’s series finale – a three-game set against 10-6 Hills West. West is currently in second place in League IV behind West Babylon.

Last Friday the Warriors knocked off lowly Copiague 7-2 at home to win their first series of the season. The Eagles have won all of two games this year. Last Wednesday Copiague beat Comsewogue 3-2 and on Tuesday it was the Warriors who won 3-2 behind Chris Cepeda’s two-hit pitching performance. Hopefully Comsewogue can carry their momentum forward and do the same to Hills West this week.

On Friday Nick Calamia tossed a two-hitter, allowing just one earned run over seven innings with one strike out. It was Calamia’s first win since he shut out North Babylon 6-0 on April 16.

Playing Inspired Softball in Comsewogue

Meanwhile, the softball team also won their fourth game of the season last Friday as the Lady Warriors knocked off Copiague 9-0. Again it was Meghan Zimbler who turned in a gem, giving up just three hits while striking out eight Eagles to earn her fourth win of the season.

After losing starting catch Hope Reindl two weeks ago the Warriors have won two of their last five games – a bright sign over the dark cloud that has been their 2011 season. In fact, since Reindl was lost to a heart attack while playing in a pickup basketball game the Warriors have played inspired softball.

After beating North Babylon 10-1 the Warriors lost to Smithtown East 3-0 then lost to Bellport 5-2 Monday afternoon before being blanked by West Babylon 1-0 last Wednesday and winning 9-0 against the Eagles. But over the last five games the Warriors have given up just 10 runs – a far cry from their previous five games when they yielded 47 runs while wining just once.

So which team will show up? We’ll have to wait and see. Comsewogue finishes their spring campaign with three games this week at Riverhead on Monday, at home on Tuesday versus Copiague and the season finale at Hills West Wednesday afternoon.
