International Beach Clean-Up Day Is Saturday
Get involved at one of these beach clean-ups happening in the local area this weekend.
Tired of seeing soda bottles and cigarettes on the beach? Volunteer to lend a hand cleaning up Smithtown area beaches this weekend.
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is looking volunteers to take part in the 28th annual New York State Beach Cleanup, in cooperation with American Littoral Society and sponsored by the the Natural Heritage Trust. The event is being held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy's International Beach Clean-up Day.
According to the Ocean Conservancy, more than 500,000 volunteers collected more than 10 million pounds of trash in 2012. The most common items picked up was cigarette butts, followed food wrappers/containers and plastic bottles.
