Some stories are downright strange. Here's our wrap-up from around Northern Suffolk and the East End.

As a local news organization, Patch covers stories of all kinds, from heartbreaking tragedies to inspiring tales of community brotherhood. But some stories are just plain weird. Here are some of the stranger headlines from the past seven days.

Uptick in Births Might Be Sandy-Related

We know what you’re thinking: What’s so weird about that?

And our answer? Nothing, absolutely nothing.

(wink)

This week,  a published report concluded that a rise in births at Long Island hospitals – including Stony Brook University Hospital – could amount to a collective Superstorm Sandy baby boom.

Nine months after Sandy hit Long Island, a spokesman for Stony Brook told said that the hospital had more births in July of 2013 than in July of 2012, about 10 to 11 more.

In Nassau, county, the spike was a bit higher. A representative from Nassau University Medical Center told Patch births were up 16 percent in July, compared to the previous year.

It was unclear how many of the babies were named Sandy.

The Fish is Bigger Than the Kid

Capt. Eric Huner, of Captain Fish of Port Jefferson, this week told the story of a 10-year-old landing a 20-pound striped bass during a recent charter. And he has the video to prove it.

During a four-hour trip, Huner posted on his Patch blog, Jack Hutch ended up getting a big bass to bite and fought it like a "formidable warrior." With a hand from the captain, the striper was reeled in, and at the end of the video, the young angler gets to grin from ear to ear with his catch of the day.
