Located in the historic Chandlery Building in Harborfront Park, the Maritime Explorium is an interactive, hands-on experience that is fun and education. Toys that teach, ropes to learn how to tie nautical knots, a real boat filled with rice, and an array of ever-changing exhibits not only entertain but help children learn important Scientific, Technological, Engineering and Math ideas -- it's a STEM learning environment at its best. Everywhere you look there are opportunities to learn -- from ecology to mechanics to magnets. Each weekend features a different STEM focus.

The centerpiece of the museum is children's engineering of solutions to challenges. Whether its designing a hovercraft or changing a sinker into a floater or creating a formula for a ship-shape brass cleaner, kids are using their imaginations to solve problems. One popular exhibit between problem solving tasks is a unique computer navigation station that lets kids pilot a boat around a virtual Port Jefferson Harbor. Along with the module are physical maps, depth models and measuring charts that allow children to learn all about how boats make their way around the harbor and how the Port Jefferson ferry follows the channel across the Long Island Sound and back.

The museum has a Saturday drop-off program between the hours of 1 pm and 2:45 pm for kids ages 3 through 10 years old. For $15 ($10 for siblings) children can spend time at the museum so parents can enjoy the sites and shopping in Port Jefferson.

Open to the public every Saturday and Sunday, 1-5 PM for only $5 per person. Unique birthday parties, school field trips, themed mini-courses, scout badge programs, teacher education opportunities and customized events of all types.
