Readers’ Choice is a weekly feature where we ask you – our readers – to tell us your top picks. Each Monday we’ll list our nominees – this week was favorite seafood restaurants – and ask for your recommendation. This week was the fiercest competition of all our Readers' Choice polls so far. Mount Sinai Friary Hoping Stolen Virgin Mary Statue Returned

Brothers hoping whoever stole Virgin Mary statue finds it in their heart to return it.

According to a report in the Village Beacon Record, a Virgin Mary statue was recently stolen from the Little Portion Friary on Old Post Road in Mt. Sinai. While the brothers have not reported it to the police, they are hoping whoever stole it is nice enough to return it. The three-and-a-half-foot statue, which was purchased two years ago to replace one that had been there since the 1930s. was missing for a few days before the brothers noticed.  For more on this story, click here for the full report in the Village Beacon Record.

Hauppauge Realtors Help With Spring Cleaning at Port Jeff’s Hope House

Volunteer work was part of an annual corporate day of giving back to the communities they serve.

The real estate agents from Keller Williams Realty Associates in Hauppauge traveled to Port Jefferson on Thursday, May 10 to help Hope House Ministries spruce up its yard and restore an old barn as part of a corporate day of giving. During their annual RED Day (Renew, Energize and Donate), thousands of the agency’s associates across the country and in Canada head into their local communities to take part in volunteer projects to renew and energize the neighborhoods they serve, according to their website. Twenty-two agents from the Hauppague office of Keller Williams Realty Associates spent the day with Hope House doing yard work and flower planting at two housing buildings and at the office on High Street. Anglers and Bait Shop Owners Have Mixed Feelings Over New Fishing Regs

Looser restrictions mean more and bigger fish for anglers.

Ask the average fisherman and he’ll tell you that the less restriction on fishing the better. More fish, bigger fish and a longer season means more fun out on the water. Just this month, the New York State Department of Conservation loosened restrictions on fluke, porgy and black sea bass, meaning that the agency thinks the populations of those species are healthy and plentiful. “These regulation changes reflect improvements to populations of scup [porgy], black sea bass and summer flounder [fluke],” said Kathy Moser, DEC Assistant Commissioner for Natural Resources, in a statement announcing the expansion. Weekend LIRR Alcohol Ban Starts Friday [POLL]

The railroad says the goal is to control unruly passengers.

The Long Island Rail Road is banning alcohol on weekend trains coming out of Penn Station, starting tonight.  All trains from midnight to 5 a.m. will be alcohol free. Booze will also be banned on LIRR platforms. The goal is to reduce the number of disorderly passengers and protect train crews from unruly riders, the LIRR said. What do you think of the idea? Port Jefferson Man Named Ultimate Ranger Fan

Jake Gittler, 20, wins contest by submitting winning YouTube video.

While the New York Rangers work toward winning the Stanley Cup this year - currently they're in the Eastern Conference Finals against the New Jersey Devils - one Port Jefferson fan is already looking forward to next year. Jake Gittler, 20, recently took an outside-the-box approach to winning a YouTube video fan contest, showing why he deserved season tickets to each and every Rangers game next year. He was named the winner during intermission of a home game in April, beating out four other finalists. Gittler, a political science major at the University of Vermont according to the Port Times Record, scaled a snow-covered summit on a cold and windy day, proceeding to hoist a homemade Stanley Cup, ending with "I am a Ranger!"
