Corinne ,"they" are the homeless, drunks, vagrants, dope addicts, pick pockets - that isRead More the"they" I do not want them in my neighborhood any longer! I am sick of it, this is not what I was looking for in my community when I bought my house & brought my family here. If you are up to it, rather then making a comedy of it, fight to build them a facility giving them shelter & resources to help themselves, rather than a place where they can sleep off their drunk and high. Refurbish the facilities at Pilgrim State & use this for shelter, medical, dental, social services, Dept. of Labor, etc. - heck in fact put these people to work & pay them to help retro-fit the place! I am sure many of them have talents that can be put to good use & help them to be a productive community member rather than patting them on the head & doing nothing to help them. I am tired of being accosted by these people for money to buy liquor, I am tired of seeing them laying around in my community and train station, drunk, high, pissing, defecating, puking, sleeping, fighting, spitting & so on. My family does not need to see this and giving the a couple of bucks when they approach is not the answer - if people really want to help as you state you do - then do something to help them be productive members of society again. I do not want to help - my taxes go for that, I want them out of my neighborhood! I am sick of it, you want to help then really help. Do these people find humor in their situation as you do?

Your response Corinna was well said. I worked at the shelter shortly after it opened and worked sideRead More by side with you. I can confirm the stories are both sad and yes, funny. I remember working the overnight shift and "Bob" an overnight guest was talking in his sleep. When I approached his bed he seemed to get louder. I stood there for a moment, just long enough to watch Bob open one eye, smile and say "I gotchya". Or the time I did an intake on a young man who told me he was dating Brooke Shields and he could start fires with his eyes. I promptly responded "I admire your taste in women but setting fires in the center or the community is against the rules". Listen folks we get it, your scared when you see these people, but many are no different than you or I. I have seen college professors, technicians from Brookhaven Lab, doctors and yes even social workers come through the center. The economy is such that people find it hard to save, therefore statistically many Long Islanders are 2 paychecks away from being homeless! I always find it amazing how many people will whine and moan about a problem, but never lift a finger to address or help the situation. Keep up the good work Corinna.

To say that the problem should be simply pushed off to another area is both ignorant and selfish.Read More One should not think that by moving the facility will cause the real problem to dry up and disappear. Thousands of people are homeless by situation and not choice. To say that upper PJ is somehow a magnet for problem people is just a snobby outlook from those that live in PJ. As someone that grew up there and now lives in Phoenix AZ, I am ecstatic to return "home" and see so little problem as opposed to the rest of the country I have traveled. Work on fixing the problem, not just shuffling it off to some other neighborhood. Kris
