The railroad says the goal is to control unruly passengers.
The Long Island Rail Road is banning alcohol on weekend trains coming out of Penn Station, starting tonight. All trains from midnight to 5 a.m. will be alcohol free. Booze will also be banned on LIRR platforms. The goal is to reduce the number of disorderly passengers and protect train crews from unruly riders, the LIRR said. What do you think of the idea? Is drinking a problem on the LIRR? Tell us in the poll or share your thoughts as a comment below.

Port Jefferson Station-Terryvlle Civic Association beautification committee chairperson talks about ways to help the environment when landscaping.
On a recent CNBC Business News program it was revealed that water is in such short supply globally, it will be the catalyst of future wars. Long Island is a unique area that must reduce the contamination of "run off" water, which overwhelms our water treatment facilities. The inability of our facilities to purify water, leads to polluted drinking water. To this end, a recent ban on pesticide and herbicide use for most of the year has been enacted in our Township. Erratic national weather patterns and the pollution of drinking water by hydro-fracking, has put a spotlight on water. While there is marginally adequate water today in our area, the recent up-tic of drought periods, community environmental concerns, and a visionary roadmap for …

Residents say plans to build affordable housing in hamlet will cripple schools.
Port Jefferson Station has become ground zero in the debate over development of multifamily and workforce housing in Brookhaven Town as of late, according to residents and politicians. Long Island is an expensive place to live. Many residents are concerned about ever-increasing property taxes, disappearing open spaces and the lack of quality employment prospects. Brain drain is a major worry as the Island’s youth flee the area for more affordable opportunities elsewhere. Young people just starting out complain that makeshift basement apartments and living in their parents’ homes just aren’t viable options anymore. On the other hand, building affordable, high density, workforce housing might be a Band-Aid solution that harms communities …

Bayles Boat Shop celebrates Port Jefferson's ship building heritage.
The Long Island Seaport and Eco Center (LISEC) celebrated their annual meeting by inviting members to join them for a short meeting, a superb meal, and an exciting computer based slide show put together by Phil Schiavone on LISEC, the building of the Bayles Boat Shop, several environmental and discovery programs, and some of construction projects undertaken over the past few years. For those unfamiliar with the great work done by this not for profit gem right here in Port Jefferson, take the time to stop down at the beautiful Bayles Boat Shop adjacent to our Village Center and take a look at some of their projects. Along with a most pro-active president, Betty Arink, the board and its members have a keen interest in sharing their …

To the Editor, The picture above was taken on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at the corner of 25A and Bennetts Road in Setauket. The truck was parked there as part of a local Tea Party demonstration. As anyone can see, the message, in the form of a white-gloved minstrel caricature, is that of a large, dark-skinned Afro-American male on vacation, as presumably portraying President Barack Obama. I understand the right of individuals under the First Amendment to publicly voice their opinions as I am doing here. However, it is disturbing that the individual(s) who took the time to create this display and to park it on a well-traveled road must think what is depicted is both an accurate statement and appropriate for our communities. President Obama …

Grant will help village with stormwater management and habitat restoration of Mill Creek.
Port Jefferson has taken another step toward the remediation of the Mill Creek watershed with a plan that will open up blockages, remove invasive species of plants and fix stromwater runoff issues, according to the village and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC). Mill Creek starts as a small spring at Brook Road near Caroline Avenue Park and winds its way across Barnum Avenue carrying along everything that washes into it–including lawn chemicals and animal waste–dumping it all into the Long Island Sound. Along with stormwater management concerns, the creek also washes away the outflow of clean water remediated by the Environmental Protection Agency plant in Caroline Avenue Park cleaning toxins from the …
